Hepatitis A & B Combined Vaccine at Lichfield Travel Clinic
At Lichfield Travel Clinic, we offer the combined hepatitis A & B vaccine to protect against two serious liver infections with a single course. This dual-purpose vaccine is ideal for travellers or individuals at increased risk who want efficient and long-lasting protection against both viruses.
We provide the licensed Twinrix vaccine, available in adult and paediatric formulations.
Who Is at Risk of Hepatitis A & B?
Hepatitis A is usually spread through contaminated food or water, while hepatitis B is transmitted via infected blood and bodily fluids. These infections are more common in parts of:
- Africa
- Asia (including South and Southeast Asia)
- The Middle East
- Central and South America
- Eastern Europe
You may be at higher risk of hepatitis A or B if you:
Are travelling to regions with poor sanitation or limited access to clean water
Are staying abroad for extended periods or visiting rural areas
Are likely to require medical or dental treatment during your trip
Are involved in humanitarian or healthcare work
Engage in activities that increase exposure risk (e.g. tattoos, piercings, unprotected sex)
Who Should Consider the Hepatitis A & B Vaccine?
The combined vaccine is recommended for:
Travellers to areas where both hepatitis A and B are prevalent
Healthcare professionals and aid workers
People with chronic liver or kidney conditions
Individuals at risk due to lifestyle or occupational exposure
Those requiring long-term protection with minimal injections
The combined vaccine is suitable for adults and children aged 1 year and over.
How Does the Combined Hepatitis A & B Vaccine Work?
The Twinrix vaccine contains inactivated hepatitis A virus and recombinant hepatitis B surface antigen. It works by prompting your immune system to produce protective antibodies against both viruses, reducing your risk of infection.
How Is the Vaccine Administered?
The vaccine is given as a series of 3 injections in the upper arm
The standard schedule is at 0, 1, and 6 months
An accelerated schedule (0, 7, and 21 days plus a 12-month booster) is also available for last-minute travellers
The course can be started at any time before travel but should be planned in advance for full protection
How Effective Is It?
Offers high levels of protection against both hepatitis A and B
More than 95% of individuals develop immunity with the full course
Protection lasts for at least 25 years for hepatitis A and lifelong for hepatitis B (in most cases)

Some vaccines require multiple doses over a period of time, and certain vaccines take time to become fully effective. However, if your trip is sooner, don’t worry — we can still help with last-minute protection and advice.
Not necessarily. Vaccination requirements vary depending on your destination, planned activities, length of stay, and your medical history. In most cases, yes — but it depends on the type of vaccination and your specific health situation. Our clinicians will review your medical history, current medications, and any special circumstances before recommending vaccines or medications. Safety is our top priority, and we will advise you accordingly.
Some countries require an International Certificate of Vaccination (ICVP) for specific diseases, such as Yellow Fever. If this applies to your destination, we will issue an official certificate during your appointment. Always check entry requirements before you travel, or ask us for help.
Yes, it is generally safe and common to receive more than one vaccine during a single appointment. Our clinicians will space vaccines appropriately and explain what to expect, helping minimize any discomfort or side effects.
