Japanese Encephalitis Vaccine at Lichfield Travel Clinic
At Lichfield Travel Clinic, we offer the Japanese Encephalitis (JE) vaccine to protect against a potentially serious viral brain infection transmitted by mosquitoes. This vaccine is especially important for travellers visiting rural or agricultural areas in parts of Asia and the Western Pacific.
We provide the licensed Japanese Encephalitis vaccine: IXIARO.
Who Is at Risk of Japanese Encephalitis?
Japanese Encephalitis is caused by a virus spread through the bite of infected mosquitoes, primarily in:
- Southeast Asia
- The Indian subcontinent
- China
- The Western Pacific Islands
The risk of infection is highest during the rainy seasons and in areas where rice fields and pig farming are common, as these environments attract mosquitoes that can carry the virus.
Travellers at increased risk include:
Long-term travellers spending a month or more in endemic regions
Short-term travellers spending extended time outdoors, particularly in rural areas
Adventure travellers, campers, or backpackers
Those visiting areas during the monsoon or post-monsoon season
While Japanese Encephalitis is rare among travellers, the consequences can be severe, including brain inflammation, long-term neurological complications, or even death.
Who Should Consider the Japanese Encephalitis Vaccine?
The vaccine is recommended for:
Travellers spending extended periods in high-risk areas
Children over the age of 2 months visiting affected regions
Expats, aid workers, or military personnel based in rural parts of Asia
Those engaging in outdoor activities such as cycling, trekking, or camping
It is not usually necessary for those visiting urban areas for short stays.
How Does the Japanese Encephalitis Vaccine Work?
The JE vaccine (IXIARO) contains inactivated virus particles that stimulate your immune system to produce antibodies. These antibodies provide protection by recognising and attacking the virus if you are exposed during your travels.
How Is the Vaccine Administered?
The full course consists of two injections, usually into the upper arm
These are given 28 days apart
For complete protection, the second dose must be administered at least 7 days before travel
A booster dose may be recommended if you’re at ongoing risk and received the vaccine over a year ago.
How Effective Is It?
The vaccine offers over 90% protection against Japanese Encephalitis
Immunity typically develops within 7 days after the second dose
Well tolerated with minimal side effects in most individuals

It’s recommended to book your travel consultation at least 6–8 weeks before you travel. Some vaccines require multiple doses over a period of time, and certain vaccines take time to become fully effective. However, if your trip is sooner, don’t worry — we can still help with last-minute protection and advice.

In most cases, yes — but it depends on the type of vaccination and your specific health situation. Our clinicians will review your medical history, current medications, and any special circumstances before recommending vaccines or medications. Safety is our top priority, and we will advise you accordingly.
Some countries require an International Certificate of Vaccination (ICVP) for specific diseases, such as Yellow Fever. If this applies to your destination, we will issue an official certificate during your appointment. Always check entry requirements before you travel, or ask us for help.
Yes, it is generally safe and common to receive more than one vaccine during a single appointment. Our clinicians will space vaccines appropriately and explain what to expect, helping minimize any discomfort or side effects.
