MMR Vaccine

MMR Vaccine at Lichfield Travel Clinic

At Lichfield Travel Clinic, we offer the MMR vaccine to protect against three serious viral infections: measles, mumps, and rubella. These diseases can cause severe complications and are easily spread, especially in close-contact settings and during international travel.

We provide the licensed combined MMR vaccine, which is widely used and proven to be safe and effective.

Who Is at Risk of Measles, Mumps, and Rubella?

All three viruses are highly contagious and can lead to serious health issues. Although part of the routine UK childhood immunisation programme, some individuals may have missed out on one or both doses — leaving them vulnerable, especially when travelling abroad.

You may be at increased risk if you:

Have not received two doses of the MMR vaccine
Were born between 1970 and 1990, when MMR vaccination rates were lower
Are planning to travel internationally, particularly to areas with recent outbreaks
Work in healthcare, education, or childcare settings
Are attending college or university, where close living quarters can increase risk

Who Should Consider the MMR Vaccine?

The MMR vaccine is recommended for:

Adults and children who missed routine MMR vaccinations
Individuals with uncertain vaccination history
Travellers heading to countries where measles outbreaks are ongoing
Healthcare professionals, teachers, and those working with vulnerable groups
Women planning pregnancy who haven’t had rubella vaccination (note: avoid pregnancy for 1 month after receiving the vaccine)
Please note: The MMR vaccine is a live vaccine and is not suitable for individuals with significantly weakened immune systems.

How Does the MMR Vaccine Work?

The MMR vaccine contains weakened (attenuated) versions of the measles, mumps, and rubella viruses. It helps your immune system build a strong defence by producing antibodies, which will protect you from future exposure.

How Is the Vaccine Administered?

Given as two injections, typically in the upper arm
Doses are spaced at least 4 weeks apart
If you’ve only received one dose in the past, you may just need one more to complete your course

How Effective Is It?

Two doses offer over 99% protection against measles and rubella, and around 88% against mumps
Protection is long-lasting and often lifelong
Helps prevent outbreaks in the community through herd immunity

1. When should I book my travel vaccination appointment?2025-07-21T13:17:39+00:00

It’s recommended to book your travel consultation at least 6–8 weeks before you travel. Some vaccines require multiple doses over a period of time, and certain vaccines take time to become fully effective. However, if your trip is sooner, don’t worry — we can still help with last-minute protection and advice.

2. Do I need travel vaccinations for every country I visit?2025-07-21T13:18:02+00:00

Not necessarily. Vaccination requirements vary depending on your destination, planned activities, length of stay, and your medical history. During your consultation, our trained professionals will assess your itinerary and provide personalized travel health advice based on up-to-date guidance from NaTHNaC (National Travel Health Network and Centre).

3. What travel vaccines do you offer at the clinic?2025-07-21T13:18:30+00:00

Lichfield Travel Clinic offers a comprehensive range of vaccinations including:

  • Hepatitis A & B

  • Typhoid

  • Tetanus, Diphtheria & Polio (Td/IPV)

  • Rabies

  • Yellow Fever (we are a registered Yellow Fever centre)

  • Japanese Encephalitis

  • Cholera

  • Meningitis ACWY

We also provide antimalarial medication and advice tailored to your travel needs.

6. Can I get travel vaccinations if I have a medical condition or am pregnant?2025-07-21T13:19:39+00:00

In most cases, yes — but it depends on the type of vaccination and your specific health situation. Our clinicians will review your medical history, current medications, and any special circumstances before recommending vaccines or medications. Safety is our top priority, and we will advise you accordingly.

5. Do I need proof of vaccination to enter certain countries?2025-07-21T13:19:17+00:00

Some countries require an International Certificate of Vaccination (ICVP) for specific diseases, such as Yellow Fever. If this applies to your destination, we will issue an official certificate during your appointment. Always check entry requirements before you travel, or ask us for help.

4. Is it safe to get multiple vaccinations at the same time?2025-07-21T13:18:56+00:00

Yes, it is generally safe and common to receive more than one vaccine during a single appointment. Our clinicians will space vaccines appropriately and explain what to expect, helping minimize any discomfort or side effects.
