Who Is at Risk of Measles, Mumps, and Rubella?
All three viruses are highly contagious and can lead to serious health issues. Although part of the routine UK childhood immunisation programme, some individuals may have missed out on one or both doses — leaving them vulnerable, especially when travelling abroad.
You may be at increased risk if you:
Have not received two doses of the MMR vaccine
Were born between 1970 and 1990, when MMR vaccination rates were lower
Are planning to travel internationally, particularly to areas with recent outbreaks
Work in healthcare, education, or childcare settings
Are attending college or university, where close living quarters can increase risk
Who Should Consider the MMR Vaccine?
The MMR vaccine is recommended for:
Adults and children who missed routine MMR vaccinations
Individuals with uncertain vaccination history

Women planning pregnancy who haven’t had rubella vaccination (note: avoid pregnancy for 1 month after receiving the vaccine)
Please note: The MMR vaccine is a live vaccine and is not suitable for individuals with significantly weakened immune systems.
How Does the MMR Vaccine Work?
The MMR vaccine contains weakened (attenuated) versions of the measles, mumps, and rubella viruses. It helps your immune system build a strong defence by producing antibodies, which will protect you from future exposure.
How Is the Vaccine Administered?
Given as two injections, typically in the upper arm
Doses are spaced at least 4 weeks apart
If you’ve only received one dose in the past, you may just need one more to complete your course
How Effective Is It?
Two doses offer over 99% protection against measles and rubella, and around 88% against mumps
Protection is long-lasting and often lifelong
Helps prevent outbreaks in the community through herd immunity
