Tick-borne Encephalitis

Tick-Borne Encephalitis Vaccine at Lichfield Travel Clinic

At Lichfield Travel Clinic, we offer the tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) vaccine to protect against a potentially serious viral infection spread through tick bites. Tick-borne encephalitis can affect the brain and central nervous system, and is most commonly found in parts of Europe and Asia.

The vaccine provides effective protection for travellers visiting rural or forested areas where ticks are present — especially during the warmer months when tick activity is highest.

We provide the licensed tick-borne encephalitis vaccine: TicoVac (also known as FSME-IMMUN).

Who Is at Risk of Tick-Borne Encephalitis?

Tick-borne encephalitis is caused by the TBE virus, which is transmitted through the bite of infected ticks. In rare cases, it can also be contracted from consuming unpasteurised dairy products from infected animals.

You’re at greater risk of TBE if you plan to:

Travel to rural or forested areas in countries such as Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, Poland, the Baltics, and parts of Russia or Eastern Asia
Take part in outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, cycling, fishing, or forestry work
Stay in endemic regions for extended periods during the spring to autumn months
The risk is higher in wooded or grassy areas, especially if you’re exposed to ticks for long periods without protective clothing or insect repellent.

Who Should Consider the Tick-Borne Encephalitis Vaccine?

The TBE vaccine is recommended for:

Travellers planning outdoor activities in high-risk areas
Backpackers and adventure travellers visiting rural parts of Europe or Asia
Expatriates, long-stay travellers, or those working in forestry or field research
Anyone at ongoing occupational risk, including military personnel, park rangers, and agricultural workers
The vaccine is suitable for adults and children over the age of one year.

How Does the Tick-Borne Encephalitis Vaccine Work?

The TBE vaccine works by stimulating your immune system to produce antibodies that protect you against the TBE virus. It does not protect against other tick-borne infections (like Lyme disease), so additional preventive measures are still recommended.

How Is the Vaccine Administered?

The vaccine is given as a course of two or three injections:

Initial course: Two doses, given 1 to 3 months apart
Third (booster) dose: Given 5 to 12 months after the second dose for long-term protection
A booster dose is recommended every 3 to 5 years if ongoing protection is needed
For short-notice travellers, an accelerated schedule may be possible.

How Effective Is It?

The vaccine is highly effective, offering around 95–99% protection after the full course
A high level of protection is achieved even after just the first two doses
Boosters maintain long-term immunity, especially for regular travellers to endemic regions

1. When should I book my travel vaccination appointment?2025-07-21T13:17:39+00:00

It’s recommended to book your travel consultation at least 6–8 weeks before you travel. Some vaccines require multiple doses over a period of time, and certain vaccines take time to become fully effective. However, if your trip is sooner, don’t worry — we can still help with last-minute protection and advice.

2. Do I need travel vaccinations for every country I visit?2025-07-21T13:18:02+00:00

Not necessarily. Vaccination requirements vary depending on your destination, planned activities, length of stay, and your medical history. During your consultation, our trained professionals will assess your itinerary and provide personalized travel health advice based on up-to-date guidance from NaTHNaC (National Travel Health Network and Centre).

3. What travel vaccines do you offer at the clinic?2025-07-21T13:18:30+00:00

Lichfield Travel Clinic offers a comprehensive range of vaccinations including:

  • Hepatitis A & B

  • Typhoid

  • Tetanus, Diphtheria & Polio (Td/IPV)

  • Rabies

  • Yellow Fever (we are a registered Yellow Fever centre)

  • Japanese Encephalitis

  • Cholera

  • Meningitis ACWY

We also provide antimalarial medication and advice tailored to your travel needs.

6. Can I get travel vaccinations if I have a medical condition or am pregnant?2025-07-21T13:19:39+00:00

In most cases, yes — but it depends on the type of vaccination and your specific health situation. Our clinicians will review your medical history, current medications, and any special circumstances before recommending vaccines or medications. Safety is our top priority, and we will advise you accordingly.

5. Do I need proof of vaccination to enter certain countries?2025-07-21T13:19:17+00:00

Some countries require an International Certificate of Vaccination (ICVP) for specific diseases, such as Yellow Fever. If this applies to your destination, we will issue an official certificate during your appointment. Always check entry requirements before you travel, or ask us for help.

4. Is it safe to get multiple vaccinations at the same time?2025-07-21T13:18:56+00:00

Yes, it is generally safe and common to receive more than one vaccine during a single appointment. Our clinicians will space vaccines appropriately and explain what to expect, helping minimize any discomfort or side effects.
