How Does the Typhoid Vaccine Work?
The typhoid vaccine stimulates your immune system to produce antibodies that fight off Salmonella Typhi. There are two types of vaccine:
Injectable (Typhim Vi): Contains inactivated bacteria and is suitable for most travellers aged 2 and above
Oral (Vivotif): Live attenuated vaccine taken as capsules over several days, suitable for those aged 6 and above who prefer not to have an injection
Neither vaccine provides complete protection, so safe food and water practices are still important while travelling.
How Is the Vaccine Administered?
Injectable (Typhim Vi): Given as a single injection, usually in the upper arm
Oral (Vivotif): Taken as 3 capsules, one every other day, completed at least one week before travel
Protection typically lasts for:
Around 3 years with the injectable vaccine
Around 1 year with the oral vaccine
Boosters are recommended if you’re travelling to high-risk areas again after this period.
How Effective Is It?
The vaccine reduces the risk of typhoid fever by approximately 70–80%
It’s most effective when combined with good hygiene and food safety practices during travel
While not 100% protective, vaccination significantly lowers your chance of severe illness
