Who Is at Risk of Chickenpox?
Chickenpox is a common infection, especially in children, and is typically mild. Most children recover fully and develop lifelong immunity. However, in certain groups, chickenpox can lead to more serious health problems — especially in:
Pregnant women
Adults (as they tend to experience more severe symptoms)
Individuals with weakened immune systems, such as those undergoing chemotherapy or living with conditions like HIV
Who Should Consider the Chickenpox Vaccine?
The vaccine is advised for those who are not immune to chickenpox and are likely to be in close contact with vulnerable individuals.

If you’re undergoing immunosuppressive treatment, it’s important that any children or close contacts who haven’t had chickenpox are vaccinated to prevent passing the virus on to you.
It’s also recommended for people working in high-risk environments, such as:
Healthcare professionals (including non-clinical staff like receptionists and caterers)
Laboratory workers who might be exposed to the virus through their work
Please note: Because this is a live vaccine, it is not suitable for those with weakened immune systems, as the weakened virus may still pose a risk to their health.
How Does the Chickenpox Vaccine Work?
The chickenpox vaccine contains a small, weakened form of the varicella-zoster virus. It works by prompting your immune system to create protective antibodies. These antibodies help your body fight off the virus if you’re exposed in the future, reducing your risk of developing chickenpox.
How Is the Vaccine Administered?
The vaccine is given as two separate injections, usually in the upper arm. These are spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart for full effectiveness.
How Effective Is It?
Around 90% of children will develop immunity after just one dose.
A second dose provides an even stronger immune response and is recommended.
While slightly less effective in adults and teenagers, around 75% of vaccinated individuals in these age groups will develop immunity.
