Cholera Vaccine at Lichfield Travel Clinic
Protect yourself against cholera — a potentially serious bacterial infection — with the cholera vaccine available at Lichfield Travel Clinic. Cholera is commonly found in areas with poor sanitation and limited access to clean drinking water, making it a key concern for travellers visiting certain parts of the world.
We offer the oral cholera vaccine DUKORAL, a licensed and effective protection against this waterborne illness.
Who Is at Risk of Cholera?
Cholera is transmitted through contaminated food and water and can cause severe diarrhoea and dehydration. While it is rare in the UK, it poses a serious risk to people travelling to countries with inadequate sanitation, including parts of:
• Sub-Saharan Africa
• South and Southeast Asia
• Central and South America
• The Middle East
Travellers who are especially at risk include:
• Aid or humanitarian workers
• Backpackers and adventure travellers
• People visiting friends and relatives in high-risk areas
• Individuals with reduced stomach acid or underlying health conditions
Who Should Consider the Cholera Vaccine?
The cholera vaccine is recommended for:
• Travellers heading to regions where cholera outbreaks are occurring
• People working in disaster relief, refugee camps, or areas with limited access to clean water
• Individuals with medical conditions that put them at greater risk of dehydration
It’s especially important for anyone planning extended stays or remote travel where medical help may be difficult to access.
How Does the Cholera Vaccine Work?
The cholera vaccine, DUKORAL, contains inactivated bacteria and a component of the cholera toxin. It helps your body produce antibodies that protect the gut lining, making you less likely to become seriously ill if exposed to the cholera bacteria.
How Is the Vaccine Administered?
DUKORAL is taken orally, not by injection.
• The course consists of two doses, taken 1 to 6 weeks apart (at least 1 week between doses).
• You must avoid eating or drinking for 1 hour before and 1 hour after taking each dose for it to be effective.
• For continuous protection, a booster dose is recommended after 2 years if you’re still at risk.
Children aged 2–6 years require three doses.
How Effective Is It?
• Offers up to 85% protection shortly after completing the course
• Protection gradually decreases over time, so booster doses are important if ongoing exposure is expected
• Also provides partial protection against Enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC), a common cause of traveller’s diarrhoea

It’s recommended to book your travel consultation at least 6–8 weeks before you travel. Some vaccines require multiple doses over a period of time, and certain vaccines take time to become fully effective. However, if your trip is sooner, don’t worry — we can still help with last-minute protection and advice.

In most cases, yes — but it depends on the type of vaccination and your specific health situation. Our clinicians will review your medical history, current medications, and any special circumstances before recommending vaccines or medications. Safety is our top priority, and we will advise you accordingly.
Some countries require an International Certificate of Vaccination (ICVP) for specific diseases, such as Yellow Fever. If this applies to your destination, we will issue an official certificate during your appointment. Always check entry requirements before you travel, or ask us for help.
Yes, it is generally safe and common to receive more than one vaccine during a single appointment. Our clinicians will space vaccines appropriately and explain what to expect, helping minimize any discomfort or side effects.
