We are here to ensure that you stay healthy and safe throughout your travels.
Hepatitis A Vaccine at Lichfield Travel Clinic
At Lichfield Travel Clinic, we offer the hepatitis A vaccine to protect against this highly contagious liver infection. Hepatitis A is commonly spread through contaminated food or water, and is a serious concern for travellers visiting areas with lower sanitation standards.
We provide licensed hepatitis A vaccines, including Havrix, Vaqta, and Avaxim, for both adults and children.
Who Is at Risk of Hepatitis A?
Hepatitis A is found worldwide but is especially common in regions where clean water and food hygiene are limited, including:
- South and Central America
- Africa
- The Middle East
- Asia (including India, Pakistan, and Southeast Asia)
- Eastern Europe
You may be at increased risk if:
You are travelling to or staying in rural or remote areas
You plan to eat street food or drink untreated water
You are visiting friends or relatives in higher-risk countries
You have a medical condition affecting your liver
Hepatitis A can cause fever, fatigue, abdominal pain, jaundice, and in rare cases, long-term liver complications.
Who Should Consider the Hepatitis A Vaccine?
Vaccination is recommended for:
All travellers to countries where hepatitis A is common
Individuals with chronic liver conditions
Men who have sex with men
People who use recreational drugs
Those working in jobs with potential exposure to the virus, such as:
Aid and relief workers
Medical and laboratory staff
Sewage and sanitation workers
The vaccine is suitable for both adults and children over the age of 1 year.
How Does the Hepatitis A Vaccine Work?
The vaccine contains an inactivated (killed) version of the hepatitis A virus. It works by prompting your immune system to develop protective antibodies. These antibodies help prevent infection if you’re exposed to the virus while travelling.
How Is the Vaccine Administered?
The vaccine is given as an injection in the upper arm
You will need two doses:
The first dose provides protection for around 12 months
The second dose (booster) is given 6 to 12 months later and extends protection for at least 25 years
A combined Hepatitis A & B or Hepatitis A & Typhoid vaccine is also available if required
How Effective Is It?
The first dose gives protection within 2 weeks
Over 95% of people develop protective immunity after one dose
The booster dose provides long-term immunity for 25 years or more

It’s recommended to book your travel consultation at least 6–8 weeks before you travel. Some vaccines require multiple doses over a period of time, and certain vaccines take time to become fully effective. However, if your trip is sooner, don’t worry — we can still help with last-minute protection and advice.
Not necessarily. Vaccination requirements vary depending on your destination, planned activities, length of stay, and your medical history. In most cases, yes — but it depends on the type of vaccination and your specific health situation. Our clinicians will review your medical history, current medications, and any special circumstances before recommending vaccines or medications. Safety is our top priority, and we will advise you accordingly.
Some countries require an International Certificate of Vaccination (ICVP) for specific diseases, such as Yellow Fever. If this applies to your destination, we will issue an official certificate during your appointment. Always check entry requirements before you travel, or ask us for help.
Yes, it is generally safe and common to receive more than one vaccine during a single appointment. Our clinicians will space vaccines appropriately and explain what to expect, helping minimize any discomfort or side effects.
