Meningitis ACWY

Meningitis ACWY Vaccine at Lichfield Travel Clinic

At Lichfield Travel Clinic, we offer the Meningitis ACWY vaccine to protect against four types of meningococcal bacteria — A, C, W, and Y — which can cause life-threatening meningitis and septicaemia. This vaccine is especially important for certain travellers and individuals in close-contact settings.

We provide the licensed Meningitis ACWY vaccines: Menveo and Nimenrix.

Who Is at Risk of Meningitis ACWY?

Meningitis caused by meningococcal bacteria can progress rapidly and lead to serious complications or death. While rare, outbreaks can occur globally — particularly in parts of Africa and during large gatherings.

You may be at higher risk if:

You’re travelling to the sub-Saharan meningitis belt (especially during the dry season, December to June)
You’re attending the Hajj or Umrah pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia (vaccination is a visa requirement)
You’re a student living in shared accommodation, such as university halls of residence
You have certain medical conditions that affect your spleen or immune system

Who Should Consider the Meningitis ACWY Vaccine?

The vaccine is recommended for:

Travellers to high-risk areas, including sub-Saharan Africa
Hajj and Umrah pilgrims — the Saudi government requires proof of vaccination
Teenagers and young adults starting university or college
Individuals with specific medical conditions or immune system deficiencies
People in close-contact environments, such as military barracks or boarding schools
If you are unsure whether you need the vaccine, our clinical team can provide personalised advice based on your travel plans and health history.

How Does the Meningitis ACWY Vaccine Work?

The vaccine stimulates your immune system to produce antibodies against the A, C, W, and Y strains of Neisseria meningitidis. These antibodies help your body recognise and defend against the bacteria if you’re exposed.

How Is the Vaccine Administered?

A single injection, usually in the upper arm
Ideally given at least 2 weeks before travel or group events
Suitable for children over the age of 6 weeks, with dose and schedule based on age
A certificate of vaccination may be issued if required for travel documentation.

How Effective Is It?

Provides strong protection against meningococcal A, C, W, and Y strains
Immunity develops within 7 to 10 days
Protection typically lasts for at least 5 years
A booster may be needed for ongoing risk or repeat travel to high-risk regions

1. When should I book my travel vaccination appointment?2025-07-21T13:17:39+00:00

It’s recommended to book your travel consultation at least 6–8 weeks before you travel. Some vaccines require multiple doses over a period of time, and certain vaccines take time to become fully effective. However, if your trip is sooner, don’t worry — we can still help with last-minute protection and advice.

2. Do I need travel vaccinations for every country I visit?2025-07-21T13:18:02+00:00

Not necessarily. Vaccination requirements vary depending on your destination, planned activities, length of stay, and your medical history. During your consultation, our trained professionals will assess your itinerary and provide personalized travel health advice based on up-to-date guidance from NaTHNaC (National Travel Health Network and Centre).

3. What travel vaccines do you offer at the clinic?2025-07-21T13:18:30+00:00

Lichfield Travel Clinic offers a comprehensive range of vaccinations including:

  • Hepatitis A & B

  • Typhoid

  • Tetanus, Diphtheria & Polio (Td/IPV)

  • Rabies

  • Yellow Fever (we are a registered Yellow Fever centre)

  • Japanese Encephalitis

  • Cholera

  • Meningitis ACWY

We also provide antimalarial medication and advice tailored to your travel needs.

6. Can I get travel vaccinations if I have a medical condition or am pregnant?2025-07-21T13:19:39+00:00

In most cases, yes — but it depends on the type of vaccination and your specific health situation. Our clinicians will review your medical history, current medications, and any special circumstances before recommending vaccines or medications. Safety is our top priority, and we will advise you accordingly.

5. Do I need proof of vaccination to enter certain countries?2025-07-21T13:19:17+00:00

Some countries require an International Certificate of Vaccination (ICVP) for specific diseases, such as Yellow Fever. If this applies to your destination, we will issue an official certificate during your appointment. Always check entry requirements before you travel, or ask us for help.

4. Is it safe to get multiple vaccinations at the same time?2025-07-21T13:18:56+00:00

Yes, it is generally safe and common to receive more than one vaccine during a single appointment. Our clinicians will space vaccines appropriately and explain what to expect, helping minimize any discomfort or side effects.
