Rabies Vaccine

Rabies Vaccine at Lichfield Travel Clinic

At Lichfield Travel Clinic, we offer the rabies vaccine to help protect against the rabies virus, a deadly disease transmitted through the bite or scratch of an infected animal. Rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms appear, but it is entirely preventable through prompt vaccination.

The rabies vaccine is recommended for certain travellers and individuals who may be at greater risk due to their work or lifestyle.

Who Is at Risk of Rabies?

Rabies is most commonly found in parts of Asia, Africa, and Central and South America, where vaccination of domestic animals is less widespread. The virus is typically spread by:

Dog bites (the most common source worldwide)
Bats, monkeys, and other wild animals
Scratches or saliva from infected animals entering open wounds or mucous membranes
You may be at increased risk if you:

Travel to areas where rabies is endemic
Spend extended periods in remote or rural regions
Take part in outdoor activities such as trekking, cycling, or caving
Work closely with animals (e.g. vets, animal handlers, or wildlife researchers)

Who Should Consider the Rabies Vaccine?

The vaccine is particularly recommended for:

Travellers heading to high-risk regions for extended stays or adventure trips
People involved in animal rescue or handling abroad
Children travelling to high-risk countries (they are less likely to avoid or report bites)
Laboratory workers handling rabies virus or specimens
Even if you’re vaccinated, you must still seek urgent medical attention after a potential exposure to ensure appropriate follow-up treatment.

How Does the Rabies Vaccine Work?

The rabies vaccine stimulates your immune system to produce antibodies that protect against the rabies virus. These antibodies help your body fight off the virus if you are bitten or scratched by an infected animal.

There are two uses of the rabies vaccine:

Pre-exposure vaccination – for prevention, before any exposure has occurred
Post-exposure vaccination – for treatment after a potential exposure (bitten, scratched, or licked on broken skin)
At Lichfield Travel Clinic, we offer both pre- and post-exposure rabies vaccinations.

How Is the Vaccine Administered?

Pre-exposure vaccination involves a course of three injections given over a 21–28 day period (Day 0, Day 7, and Day 21 or 28).
If you have a potential exposure after this, you will still need two further doses — but you can avoid the need for rabies immunoglobulin, which is difficult to access in some countries.

Post-exposure vaccination (if unvaccinated) usually involves four to five doses over 2–4 weeks and may also require rabies immunoglobulin.

How Effective Is It?

The rabies vaccine is highly effective in preventing rabies when administered correctly
Pre-exposure vaccination simplifies post-exposure treatment and provides vital time in areas with limited medical access
For those bitten or scratched, early action is critical, regardless of vaccination status

1. When should I book my travel vaccination appointment?2025-07-21T13:17:39+00:00

It’s recommended to book your travel consultation at least 6–8 weeks before you travel. Some vaccines require multiple doses over a period of time, and certain vaccines take time to become fully effective. However, if your trip is sooner, don’t worry — we can still help with last-minute protection and advice.

2. Do I need travel vaccinations for every country I visit?2025-07-21T13:18:02+00:00

Not necessarily. Vaccination requirements vary depending on your destination, planned activities, length of stay, and your medical history. During your consultation, our trained professionals will assess your itinerary and provide personalized travel health advice based on up-to-date guidance from NaTHNaC (National Travel Health Network and Centre).

3. What travel vaccines do you offer at the clinic?2025-07-21T13:18:30+00:00

Lichfield Travel Clinic offers a comprehensive range of vaccinations including:

  • Hepatitis A & B

  • Typhoid

  • Tetanus, Diphtheria & Polio (Td/IPV)

  • Rabies

  • Yellow Fever (we are a registered Yellow Fever centre)

  • Japanese Encephalitis

  • Cholera

  • Meningitis ACWY

6. Can I get travel vaccinations if I have a medical condition or am pregnant?2025-07-21T13:19:39+00:00

In most cases, yes — but it depends on the type of vaccination and your specific health situation. Our clinicians will review your medical history, current medications, and any special circumstances before recommending vaccines or medications. Safety is our top priority, and we will advise you accordingly.

5. Do I need proof of vaccination to enter certain countries?2025-07-21T13:19:17+00:00

Some countries require an International Certificate of Vaccination (ICVP) for specific diseases, such as Yellow Fever. If this applies to your destination, we will issue an official certificate during your appointment. Always check entry requirements before you travel, or ask us for help.

4. Is it safe to get multiple vaccinations at the same time?2025-07-21T13:18:56+00:00

Yes, it is generally safe and common to receive more than one vaccine during a single appointment. Our clinicians will space vaccines appropriately and explain what to expect, helping minimize any discomfort or side effects.
