Typhoid Vaccine

Typhoid Vaccine at Lichfield Travel Clinic

At Lichfield Travel Clinic, we offer the typhoid vaccine to help protect against Salmonella Typhi, the bacteria that causes typhoid fever. This serious illness is often spread through contaminated food and water, particularly in parts of the world with limited access to clean sanitation and hygiene.

We provide both licensed forms of the typhoid vaccine: Typhim Vi (injectable) and Vivotif (oral capsules), offering flexible protection to suit your travel plans.

Who Is at Risk of Typhoid?

Typhoid is most common in areas where access to safe food and drinking water is limited. Risk increases in countries across:

  • South Asia (including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nepal)
  • Africa
  • Southeast Asia
  • Central and South America

The risk is especially high for those travelling to rural areas, visiting friends and relatives, or staying for long periods.

You may be more at risk if you:

Eat food or drink water from street vendors or local sources
Stay in areas with poor sanitation
Visit friends and family (as hygiene practices in local homes may vary)
Are a child or have a weakened immune system

Who Should Consider the Typhoid Vaccine?

The typhoid vaccine is recommended for:

Travellers to high-risk areas, particularly in South Asia and Africa
Those planning extended stays, volunteer work, or backpacking trips
Anyone visiting friends or relatives in endemic regions
Travellers with underlying health conditions that may increase vulnerability

How Does the Typhoid Vaccine Work?

The typhoid vaccine stimulates your immune system to produce antibodies that fight off Salmonella Typhi. There are two types of vaccine:

Injectable (Typhim Vi): Contains inactivated bacteria and is suitable for most travellers aged 2 and above
Oral (Vivotif): Live attenuated vaccine taken as capsules over several days, suitable for those aged 6 and above who prefer not to have an injection
Neither vaccine provides complete protection, so safe food and water practices are still important while travelling.

How Is the Vaccine Administered?

Injectable (Typhim Vi): Given as a single injection, usually in the upper arm
Oral (Vivotif): Taken as 3 capsules, one every other day, completed at least one week before travel
Protection typically lasts for:

Around 3 years with the injectable vaccine
Around 1 year with the oral vaccine
Boosters are recommended if you’re travelling to high-risk areas again after this period.

How Effective Is It?

The vaccine reduces the risk of typhoid fever by approximately 70–80%
It’s most effective when combined with good hygiene and food safety practices during travel
While not 100% protective, vaccination significantly lowers your chance of severe illness

1. When should I book my travel vaccination appointment?2025-07-21T13:17:39+00:00

It’s recommended to book your travel consultation at least 6–8 weeks before you travel. Some vaccines require multiple doses over a period of time, and certain vaccines take time to become fully effective. However, if your trip is sooner, don’t worry — we can still help with last-minute protection and advice.

2. Do I need travel vaccinations for every country I visit?2025-07-21T13:18:02+00:00

Not necessarily. Vaccination requirements vary depending on your destination, planned activities, length of stay, and your medical history. During your consultation, our trained professionals will assess your itinerary and provide personalized travel health advice based on up-to-date guidance from NaTHNaC (National Travel Health Network and Centre).

3. What travel vaccines do you offer at the clinic?2025-07-21T13:18:30+00:00

Lichfield Travel Clinic offers a comprehensive range of vaccinations including:

  • Hepatitis A & B

  • Typhoid

  • Tetanus, Diphtheria & Polio (Td/IPV)

  • Rabies

  • Yellow Fever (we are a registered Yellow Fever centre)

  • Japanese Encephalitis

  • Cholera

  • Meningitis ACWY

We also provide antimalarial medication and advice tailored to your travel needs.

6. Can I get travel vaccinations if I have a medical condition or am pregnant?2025-07-21T13:19:39+00:00

In most cases, yes — but it depends on the type of vaccination and your specific health situation. Our clinicians will review your medical history, current medications, and any special circumstances before recommending vaccines or medications. Safety is our top priority, and we will advise you accordingly.

5. Do I need proof of vaccination to enter certain countries?2025-07-21T13:19:17+00:00

Some countries require an International Certificate of Vaccination (ICVP) for specific diseases, such as Yellow Fever. If this applies to your destination, we will issue an official certificate during your appointment. Always check entry requirements before you travel, or ask us for help.

4. Is it safe to get multiple vaccinations at the same time?2025-07-21T13:18:56+00:00

Yes, it is generally safe and common to receive more than one vaccine during a single appointment. Our clinicians will space vaccines appropriately and explain what to expect, helping minimize any discomfort or side effects.
